Flixster to Acquire Rotten Tomatoes

Today, popular movie site Flixster announced that it is buying RottenTomatoes.com from IGN Entertainment for an undisclosed amount. Flixster is a movie rating site that lets you share films you like with friends and also find out what movies they like. Rotten Tomatoes is a similar beast, although it focuses more on aggregation and critical response rather than social networking. Last month rumors were swirling around about MySpace buying Flixster, with the original AllThingsD report even suggesting that Flixster would be combined with Rotten Tomatoes. While MySpace appears to be absent from the actual deal scenario, News Corp., the parent company of both MySpace and IGN Entertainment, will maintain a minority stake

Suicide Wars: Facebook Blocks App From Deleting Member Profiles

After successfully helping users unfriend a total of 50,000 Facebook members, Suicide Machine is now being thwarted by the social networking site, which has enforced its own death by guillotine to block the anti-social networking tool at the IP level. The virtual melee is now in full swing, as Facebook is issuing access-restricted errors to Suicide Machine users who attempt to wipe out their Facebook profiles. Suicide Machine was blindsided by the digital beheading, and is rallying the troops with a new message on their website as seen below. Of course, Suicide Machine isn’t ready to roll over and play dead just yet. The site is looking for ways to circumvent the IP block so that users can once again erase their Facebook friends and memories. iPhone App Will Warm the Cockles of Your Heart — Literally

Unless you’re lucky enough to live in some tropical climate, you might have noticed that much of the world is experiencing a bit of a cold snap. Luckily, there’s an app for that. Are you an iPhone owner? Well, do we have an app for you! Pocket Heater [iTunes link] is a $0.99 app that promises to turn your favorite device into a pocket/hand warmer. The app works by stressing the iPhone’s processor, battery and other functions to cause the device to overheat and hence become warm to the touch. In theory, this stressing shouldn’t cause any damage to the device or yourself, but this is still something we’d classify as “no warranty, use at your own peril.” Because my hands are actually pretty cold right now (and I can’t type wearing gloves), I decided to buy Pocket Heater and give it a go. The verdict? It works…sort of. It takes some

But because of some strict rules and professional faux pas, many athletes are finding themselves in hot water after their poorly timed or controversial status updates. Here are a few examples. In the NBA Milwaukee Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings got excited when the Bucks beat Portland in double overtime. He tweeted: As an exuberant rookie excited about a thrilling win, he wanted to share it with his fans. What’s wrong with that? It turns out it violates NBA policy. Jennings was fined and had to cough up $7,500, all for a positive tweet. Players aren’t allowed to tweet during

Put on a few extra pounds this holiday season? Don’t expect a welcome mat from BeautifulPeople.com, a dating site who recently made like a high school bully: belittling and booting members for weight gain. According to the Guardian, the site has just expelled 5,000 members for packing on the pounds. To add insult to injury, the site’s founder, Robert Hintze, stated, “Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded.” Apparently decisions were made based on photos posted to the dating site. Those holding the reins blame
